A birth doula is a professionally trained woman who offers informational, emotional and physical support for women or couples during pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period.

She is neither a doctor nor midwife and thus does not make any decisions nor perform any medical examinations or procedures regarding the health and safety of the mother or baby.  Rather, she is a complementary member of your birth team who provides  practical information, resources and referrals, encouragement and reassurance, and comfort techniques to help manage your labor and increase the potential for a positive childbearing experience.

While birth is a natural physiological process, it can also be unpredictable.   A doula can help to explain proposed medical interventions and their alternatives if they arise.
